American Month!

American Flag

America. The land of the free. The “greatest nation on earth”. The country where you can have Mountain Dew and jell-o for breakfast and be considered to be dieting. Don’t you want some gravy on that?

I’ve already invoked the spirit of American craft beer in my appeal for a British beer revolution. I’ve already partially explained that it was American beer that got me really interested in beer and brewing, opening my eyes to the fact that the stuff that people in Britain seem to want to protect is bland, mediocre, frustratingly restricted and, sometimes, just pure crap.

It was Dogfish Head and the TV show Brewmasters that opened my eyes to the possibilities. Then reddit and Beer Advocate made me jealous of all the cool, innovative, experimental beers that I never thought I’d be able to get my hands on. But, as you might have seen from my cellar posts, I’ve got some special bottles here. And they’re not doing much good just sitting there. It’s time to drink!

This month, I will be celebrating American beer. It’s a pretty arbitrary link between all these beers, but I’m not here to tell you which one is the best or the greatest or the tastiest. Taste is subjective, so that would be useless. I’m just going to talk about why they’re all interesting.

So, here’s a list of things I’ll be drinking. Some breweries have a number of representatives here, and some only one. That’s no reflection on the breweries or the beer, just availability. I’ve tried to pick some interesting ones as well as the ones quite common on the UK’s shelves.
